Retirement is expensive!
It will soon be a year (September 30th 2022) since I retired, and it’s been quite a year! Not one that I had hoped. There have been many family matters that have to be dealt with that require travel and expense. Plus, a bout of Covid was thrown into the mix in February. Now let’s add a batch of inflation to a fixed income, and boom!
It has always been my plan to try to gain enough income from my online activity to support what I do. Pay the petrol, entrance fees and so on. Now the time has come, but before you click away, I aim to provide most of my articles here in a free-for-all-to-read format.
Some of you have already kindly used Buy Me a Coffee to help defray expenses, and that has been appreciated.
From September 1st, readers will be offered three subscription levels.
Free - as you are now! Nothing will change except that commenting on posts will be restricted.
Paid - all the posts that free subscribers receive plus some additional benefits. There will be some subscriber-only posts, the ability to comment on all posts and some other goodies. I will develop more of these as time moves on but will include the following:
A vote to decide on places to visit and write about.
Occasional online live streams - some on location.
The opportunity to have a community online meetup.
Founding Member - for those who wish and are able to support me further.
Please, never stretch yourself financially. Subscriptions can be monthly, or there is a discount for annual payments. Subscriptions can be stopped by yourself online at any time.
Once the paid option is turned on, I will offer readers the ability to obtain some free months so they can extend their subscription at no cost. Details will come through later.
Once you take up a paid subscription, the cost never increases unless you were to unsubscribe, and the cost had risen since you first became a member.
The monthly cost of a subscription in UK Pounds will be £6, reduced to £50 for an annual payment. According to my calculator, that is equivalent to £4.11 per month. However, look out for ways you will be able to get some free months!
Founding Members: The benefits will be announced on launch.
As always, I appreciate your readership, and there is no pressure to become a paid subscriber. Everyone can help support what I do by commenting, liking and sharing posts. Use the blue buttons on display in my posts, as these make it easier to do these things. Google loves seeing activity, and that increases the chance of searches showing me closer to the top of the Google pages. In fact, about 20% of pages read now come from Google.
If you have not yet downloaded the Substack app you can use the link below. It makes reading my posts, commenting and more very easy from a mobile device.
Thank you for your support, and I look forward to bringing you many more stories of the places I visit. Right now, I am in the process of researching a number of places, and today will be out with my camera getting the photos for one of them.
I also like your idea of having a YouTube channel. Is your plan to monetise on YouTube? Or use it as a funnel for Substack?
One other thing you could do is look for other ways to monetise.
Subscriptions are just one way.
You could also look at advertising or sponsorship for you Substack or sponsorship for a particular post.
Or maybe one of the places you visit could shout you a freeze entry on condition that you write about the place?
