Radstock to Frome old Railway Line

Many disused railway lines in the UK have become important as cycling and walking routes. They often pass through beautiful countryside and offer a tranquil path away from motorised traffic.

The town of Radstock in Somerset offers much in the way of these old railway tracks. This town was once very prosperous due to the meeting of 2 railways, The Great Western Railway and Somerset and Dorset Railway. There were many coal mines, and the need for moving that coal was taken care of by the railways. With the demise of coal and passenger traffic, the railways were eventually closed in the 1960s, as were many other railway lines in Britain.

However, all is not lost. There are plans to reopen the line, possibly why you will see so much rail still left in situ as you walk this route. The route will be called The North Somerset Railway and may also feature heritage trains. At Midsomer Norton, a mile of track is being used by a heritage railway, Somerset and Dorset, with hopes of extending that line in both directions.
