Sam Cooke – The Singles Collection

I love many types of music but probably being due to my age the sound of the late 1950’s and 1960’s holds a special fondness. I recently purchased Sam Cooke – The Singles Collection on vinyl. It’s a double album with beautiful red discs.

The album has 35 tracks, Sam had 30 U.S. top 40 hits between 1957 and 1964, plus three more posthumously. The quality of this 180g album is superb and it’s great to hear tracks such as Wonderful World, Only Sixteen, Twistin’ the Night Away and You Send Me. These are sounds that evoke that wonderful era of a change in music styles and fashion and the end of wartime austerity in many parts of the world.

Sam Cooke

Sam Cooke was born Sam Cook (1931) in Clarksdale, Mississippi and later he added the ‘e’ to his name to show a new start in life. He was the son of Rev. Charles Cook, a minister in the Church of Christ (Holiness), and his wife, Annie Mae and was the fifth of 8 children. Sadly he was killed in 1964, being shot dead by motel manager, Bertha Franklin in what was claimed to be self-defence.
