Do you refuse a Linkedin Invitation?
Have you had a Linkedin Invitation?
I speak to many people in the course of my work and I am always surprised when some tell me that they refuse a Linkedin invitation from someone that they do not know. Why does this surprise me?
I accept virtually every Linkedin Invitation
The whole point of Linkedin is to build a network of people. If you only accept an invitation to connect from people you know you are not really expanding your network. Imagine if you only went to business network meetings where you know the people there. You would never have been able to begin networking if that was the case. We all attend network meetings to make new connections as well as build on existing relationships.
Why should we change the rules on the Internet when using Linkedin? It would therefore seem illogical to refuse every Linkedin invitation that we receive.
Should you ever refuse a Linkedin Invitation?
When I receive a Linkedin invitation I check the profile of the member. Do they appear to be a potential spammer? That is the first question I ask myself. If that is likely I will then refuse to accept the invitation. If they have just joined Linkedin and they are approaching me in what would be a completely unrelated field of business again I am going to refuse them.
I only refuse a very small number of people it would be fair to say. I spend much of my time working online and good connections are vital. In fact I offer training using Linkedin.
The next time you receive a Linkedin invitation it is probably going to be one that you should accept.
